The political in the Islamic Republic of Iran is disoriented and troubled. Nearly five decades after the Islamic Revolution, political elites and leaders have not reached a shared understanding or intersubjective consensus on the nature and essence of the political. Consequently, depending on the evolving conditions of each period, they have adopted different and sometimes contradictory approaches to the political. In the first decade, politics was explicitly equated with a pact of brotherhood and fraternity, while in later decades, it was framed in terms of friend and enemy, and at times, political disagreements were attributed merely to differences in taste. This article seeks to answer the question of what underlies the political disorder and the intense rivalries among political institutions in the Islamic Republic. Through episodic and conceptual examination, we argue that much of this disorder originates from a lack of understanding or a fundamental misinterpretation of the very concept of the political. In the conclusion, we propose agonistic politics as a potential solution in contrast to non-political, post-political, and antagonistic alternatives. The method of this article is descriptive, analytical, and prescriptive.
