Abstract
The 2022 unrest, which occurred following the death of Mahsa Amini, was one of the most serious protests in Iran since the revolution, in terms of both complexity and scope. During these protests, demonstrators utilized numerous tools across cultural, economic, social, political, media, and legal arenas. One distinctive feature of these protests compared to previous ones was the prominence of their social dimension. Activists within the "protest art" movement, centered around certain dissident artists, managed to produce and disseminate numerous works in a short period to incite and encourage public participation. Among various art forms, protest music—due to its ease of production and distribution, as well as its high resonance with the media tastes of Generation Z—played a pivotal role in the protest art movement. This article identifies and analyzes the thematic network of protest music during the 2022 protests. Research data were collected from cyberspace and high-traffic music distribution platforms and were examined using thematic analysis. The resulting thematic network, comprising 31 organizing themes and 6 global themes, indicates that the primary messages conveyed to audiences included "portraying a bleak picture of Iran's situation," "giving hope to protesters," and the notion that achieving "freedom" and "welfare" is contingent upon "the continuation of protests." Finally, the findings are analyzed through the lens of soft war theory, and practical recommendations are offered.
